Speak Out

Monday 1st March 2010

People in the town invited to tell everyone what’s bugging them

People living in Newbury are being invited to have a go at public speaking at an event in the town centre this month (March). The competition, called Speak Out! will give adults and children five minutes to speak on a topic of their choice outside the Town Hall on Saturday March 27th. MP for Newbury, Richard Benyon, the town’s Mayor, Kuldip Singh Kang and Chairman of the Newbury Retail Association, Brian Burgess have already risen to the challenge.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners of three categories, aged up to twelve years, twelve to eighteen year olds and adults. School children and students will be able to win £100 for their school or college and £70 in cash from Newbury Building Society and vouchers from W.H Smith. The event is being organised by Newbury Events Manager, Caroline Paus and members of Newbury Speakers Club and will start at 10am.
President of the Speakers Club, Tony Henderson-Newport said, “Being able to speak in public is a confidence booster that opens new doors and in some cases can advance career development. Many people get quite nervous at first, but that’s natural and can actually work to their advantage. We’ll be ready to help out with a few tips on the day.”
