Pancakes in the Market Place
Wednesday 17th February 2010
Pancake races in the Market Place today - dozens of pancake tossers turned up to take part in the annual battle.
Sixteen teams, some dressed as pirates, teletubbies and computer game characters, flipped pancakes as they raced up and down the Market Place. The overall winners for the Soroptimist Gold Cup were the Newbury Weekly News who won, wait for it ... a frying pan!
Richard Jennings, dressed as a comic character Mario from Nintendo game fame won the trophy for Best Tosser (!) and the Newbury Young People's Council, dressed as Teletubbies won the title of Best Dressed competitors.
The event was organised by the Newbury branch of Soroptimists International, an organisation for professional businesswomen which promotes social justice and equity for women thoughout the world. All monies raised from the event will go to Stroke care for Newbury and West Berkshire.
After the race the contestants made their way to St Nicolas’ Church where the traditional re-enactment of throwing pancakes from the church tower down to a crowd of urchins took place.
