There will be a hoisting of the Armed Forces Day Flag at 10.30 am outside the Council Offices in Market Street as part of the national 'Fly a Flag' campaign. The flag will then fly throughout the week running up to Armed Forces Day itself on 26th June.
West Berkshire Council is inviting local people to show their support for the difficult and often dangerous work of the armed forces by taking part in a special flag raising event in Newbury on Monday 21 June.
There will be a hoisting of the Armed Forces Day Flag at 10.30 am outside the Council Offices in Market Street as part of the national 'Fly a Flag' campaign. The flag will then fly throughout the week running up to Armed Forces Day itself on 26th June.
Soldiers based at Dennison Barracks in Hermitage, some of whom have served recently in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the commanding officer of the base Colonel John Kedar will be taking part. The event will be hosted by Councillor Graham Pask Chairman of the Council.
Councillor Pask said: “We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to both former and currently serving members of our armed forces. This ceremony will show our appreciation and respect for the men and women who do such an important job and for the families of those who have lost their lives too.”
Brigadier Peter Walker OBE, Chairman of the Berkshire branch of the Army Benevolent Fund: The Soldiers Charity and Lieutenant Colonel Michael Westropp, President of the Newbury branch of the Royal British Legion will also be attending along with standard bearers from the local Royal British Legion branches. There will be a collection for the Army Benevolent Fund.
