Pancake Races & Lunches - Shrove Tuesday, 16th Feb 2010

Teams of four are invited to enter (entry fee £20 per team), preferably in fancy dress. The races will begin at 12 noon. If you would like to sponsor and name a race (£50 per race), it would be greatly appreciated.There are three awards available. Newbury Pancake Champions for 2010, the Best Dressed Team for 2010 and Pancake Tosser of the Year!
Again this year we will continue with the old Newbury tradition of throwing pancakes from St. Nicolas' Church tower to those waiting below. These pancakes were originally for the poor of the town and the practice was discontinued in 1924, but reinstated by Newbury Soroptimist Club in 2006. Children from a local nursery will play the part of poor urchins to re-enact the old tradition, followed by one member of each race team who will then try to catch the Golden Pancake!
The traditional Pancake Lunches will be served in nearby St. Nicolas' Church Hall from 12.15 pm.
Monies raised from the event will go to the Stroke Club for Newbury & West Berkshire, the charity that Soroptimist International Newbury & District are supporting this year.
